We have been playing with unifix cubes and learning patterns, which are one of the first basic math skills kids are taught in school. This simple activity is made so children can learn to continue patterns as they place objects on the printable pattern mat and use a do-a-dot marker to replicate them. You can also adapt the activity to work at your child’s level and with objects you have on hand.

If you don’t have unifix cubes you can use other small solid colored objects like glass gems, puff balls, buttons, or whatever else you have.

Do a Dot markers are one of our favorite tools for learning (and art). If you don’t have a set, here is one of our favorite Bingo Markers (affiliate link) to use. You can also find a limited color selection, available at your local dollar store.

Once you have your bingo dot markers ready, have your kids Dot the Letters (free printable or try these dot marker activities.

Supplies:
Dot & build printable (available to download for free at the end of this post)
Bingo Markers (affiliate link), markers, or crayons
Unifix Cubes (affiliate link) or small place markers

Directions:
1.  Place unifix cubes on the circle in a pattern leaving the last few circles blank.

2.  Have the child complete the pattern by placing unifix cubes on the remaining circles.

3.  Have the child use markers to recreate the pattern on the row below the unifix cubes. Repeat 1-3.

The printable is fairly blank so you can adapt it to fit your child and their skill level. Different pattern types are: AB, ABC, AAAB, AABC, ABB, AAB, ABCC, and AABB

You could also do the activity again and have the child dot the pattern and then build it with unifix cubes.

When we had filled in all the rows, we connected the unifix cubes together and counted them to practice numbers and one-to-one correspondence.
