You may think that play dough is just play dough… but there is
something wonderful about a great batch of homemade play dough!
It should be squishy,
soft, smooth, have great consistency for building, beautiful color, and last a
long time. Today I am sharing with you our newest batch of our favorite play dough
recipe
to use with our Play Dough Mats for Spring and I included a few tips on
how to make sure your play dough turns out lump free and the perfect color.

The kids and I have spent hours playing
with play dough. It’s so great for their hands because it builds muscles while
working on fine motor control and it’s great for their brains because they
imagine, create, and build.

Ingredients:
1 C. Flour
1 C. Water
1/4 C. Salt
1 T Vegetable oil
2 tsp Cream of Tarter
Food Coloring/Craft paint

Directions:

1.  Sift your flour to avoid lumps, then mix all the ingredients together and make sure all the lumps are gone, I used my hand mixer to quickly get them out. Cook on medium heat and stir constantly. You don’t want it to burn. The mixture will get hard to stir and look like cookie dough. Remove from the heat and let it cool. I know some people don’t like to cook play dough because it takes more time, but I promise it will be worth it. This stuff lasts so long, the few extra minutes it takes to cook will be rewarded in hours of play!

2.  Divide the play dough and add coloring (I have the squeeze tube gel good coloring which always colors really well, and gel food coloring in the little pots). If the food coloring doesn’t make the color you want try adding craft paint to your play dough instead of the food coloring. It works amazingly well!!! I used paint to make our pink and purple play dough because my red food coloring has too much blue pigment in it. Be careful not to add too much paint because the play dough will get extra soft, but loose its smoothness (check out our pink play dough, I added a bit too much paint and you can see how it doesn’t look as smooth). If you aren’t sure if your food coloring is going to work well, test it out on a small amount of play dough.
